the top reply chain was a series of posts from people talking about how racism against roma people is completely justified because [shitty shit]

that song becomes increasingly weird the more time passes because of the “we haven’t had that spirit here since 1969” because 1)it sort of made sense mostly when the song was recorded in 1977 (although that’s still a long time) but now seems impossibly out of place and 2)wine isn’t a spirit and the guy who wrote the song was well aware of this fact when he wrote it and 3)the word “spirit” is obviously associated with ghosties
so it’s perfectly legitimate to, based on that line alone, surmise that the speaker in the song is dead and has been for a while
is it the correct interpretation? probably not. but it’s still a reasonable interpretation
